The Great Indian October Fest
All things good happened to the Palace this past weekend. Light drizzle on Friday (Day1), crowds to the tune of 5000, peopleall ages, no police restrictions and yes....by the way...lots of beer and 6 amazing bands!!
Day 1 (Parousia & Galeej Gurus):
Parousia whooped out a neat set full of progressive and classic rock. Opened the show with "Pull me Under", which was enough to drive the crowd insane. They then did a host of other stuff but really screwed up "Candlelight Fantasia", which was very suprising since they had nailed it at the freedom jam (i am still recovering!). They did "Sometimes I feel like Screaming"...great performance but Naveen kinda messed up
squeaks here and there. All and all....it was great watching Parousia, especially Jason, the way he shreds Pinella solos!!
Galeej Gurus...well...I cant talk a lot about them...they are ok...but this Fest, their guitar man didn't show up, so Naveen had to fill them shoes....which was ok...some nice work with "Never Before" (Purple). These guys have the chops, I need to see them in full again sometime.
Day 2 (The Ministry Of Blues & Moksha):
The Ministry took the stage and my god their guitarman/vox knows his licks and turnarounds!! Extremely tight, the ministry did songs out of Mayall, Doobie Brothers, Doors and several classic blues bands, of whom I had never heard of...but soon I will!! Philip, the guitarman is out of Bombay and the rest of the band are from here.
Moksha....well now...what can I say!! Tight as every, nailing each note and syllable, Moksha massacred the crowd with Maiden, Extreme, Purple, Floyd, Whitesnake and Metallica. Christy, undoubtedly is the tightest guitar player I have seen in India till date and I have seen a lot of them!! He loves hand jiving a lot as much as he loves throwing impeccable blues solos. Each technique in his arsenal has been polished to perfection. From natural harmonics to dive bombs...you name it. And
he is one composed SOB when he does it too! Moksha have been a part of the internationally acclaimed Maiden Tribute "Children Of the Damned". While "The Maiden Medley" lashes out on the first disc, "Chasing my Life" kills on the other. Also, their renditionof Metallica's "Four Horsemen" is a must hear and must have, says Lord Riffenstein. Please do visit ww.mokshaonline.com and learn more about these guys. They deserve it.
Day 3 (Lounge Piranha & Thermal and a Quarter):
Lounge Piranha is a funk style band with a punkish edge. Almost all songs they performed were self composed and written. Butthe song that made it to the encore was their own rendition of Britney's "Hit me baby...." thing. With a very cool attitude,Lounge Piranha are bound to be seen in many more concerts over here. And they have a god of a drummer too...I think he can take Peart anytime.
Thermal...thermal...thermal....go to their site www.thermalandaquarter.com and download their latest "Plan B". Funk, blues, progressive and the absolutely amazing vox that Bruce Lee Mani does...man....this band has got it all...Rzhude on bass, Chandy on backing guitar, bass as well as organ, and a God they call Rajeev on
drums, TAAQ opened with "Shine On You..." and NAILED it!!! They then went on to do some amazing stuff from their first "Jupiter Cafe" including "Brigade Street", which kinda created a jungian mosh due to the wah...Bruce's chops have stayed intact over the years...but surprisingly...there was not a note in distortion...which kinda upset a metalhead like me...but showed me what can be done with straight
guitar!! TAAQ....all hail!!
And here comes the best part...We met all bands in person after these performances...I told Ranjith (Vox, Parousia), that "Candlelight.." was totally fucked up and that they must polish on it...to which he promised. Couldn't meet Naveen since he rushed off to take the stage with Galeej Gurus.
Met Sarat and Philipe (B and G with the Ministry) the second day, talked about gear and got a lot of Blues suggestions from them...we also got some photos, which Ill send sometime later.
We met Lounge Piranha and TAAQ at the food court the next day. Right after their performance, Bruce saw me signalling "Give me your guitar pick damya!". I went backstage and met up with him. Same case with Christy and Allen(G G Moksha).
Damn I cant write anymore...really wating for some more...probably 26th this month when the Ministry does Wilson Garden....will keep y'all posted.
